The idea behind Shelfli

What if one book could have many readers?

That’s the idea behind Shelfli.

One shelf. Every item waiting for its next reader. See what’s on it
What Shelfli is

A shelf that keeps moving.

Right now, Shelfli lends Tinkle and Champak magazines, delivered to your door. You pick one, read it, send it back — and it’s ready for whoever wants it next. The bigger dream? A world where every book and magazine keeps moving.

The beginning

It started with a shelf.

A Tinkle every month. A Champak every fortnight.

Read, enjoyed, and carefully stored away — issue after issue, until the collection had quietly grown into a shelf of its own. Then one casual suggestion changed what that shelf could be.

“What if these stories didn’t have to stay on one shelf?”

And Shelfli was born. Read the full story ↓

The problem

Too many stories sit unread.

Not a crisis. Just a quiet waste, repeated in a lot of homes.

The usual pattern

Buy Read Shelf Unused

On Shelfli

Discover Borrow Read Return Next reader
  • Books and magazines often go unused once they’ve been read.
  • Buying every title you’re curious about isn’t always practical.
  • Good reading material can be hard to find or reach.
  • One copy can serve many readers instead of one.
The idea

So we changed the question.

“How many books do I own?”

“How many stories can I experience?”

Shelfli
The name

Why Shelfli?

A shelf isn’t just storage. It’s where stories wait to be picked up.

So we kept the shelf, and gave it a friendlier ending — something modern enough to live on a phone, and warm enough to belong in a home.

The person behind it

Meet the person behind the shelf.

Arnav, founder of SHELFLI.

Arnav Sethi

Founder, Shelfli

I’m Arnav, a student from Vadodara who enjoys exploring ideas, learning new things and building things from the ground up. I’m interested in technology, science, creativity and entrepreneurship. I believe good ideas can come from the simplest observations, and Shelfli is one such idea that I’m excited to bring to life.

Why I started Shelfli

Shelfli began with a simple thought: reading should be accessible and affordable to more people.

I started thinking about all the books and magazines that remain unused after someone has finished reading them. What if they could reach another reader? What if more people could enjoy reading without having to spend as much?

The idea brought together several things I wanted to do: make reading more accessible, make it more affordable, give existing reading material more value, and build a business around an idea I genuinely believed in.

That thought became Shelfli.

Hello, and welcome to Shelfli!

I believe that the joy of reading should be accessible to everyone. A wonderful story, an interesting book or an engaging magazine should not feel out of reach simply because of its price.

At Shelfli, our vision is to make the world of books and magazines more accessible and affordable, giving reading material more opportunities to reach readers and be enjoyed again and again.

We believe that something you’ve finished reading can become someone else’s next favourite read. By making it easier for reading material to find its next reader, we hope to encourage a culture of sharing, discovery and learning.

Our mission is simple: to make reading more accessible, affordable and convenient, while giving books and magazines a longer, more meaningful journey.

Because reading should be something more people can experience, enjoy and share.

Read More. Share More. Grow More.

The first shelf

Where Shelfli began.

From a personal collection to a growing library.

My connection with Shelfli began with my own collection.

I used to receive a new Tinkle magazine every month and Champak every fortnight. I’d read them, enjoy the stories and then carefully store them away. Over time, the collection grew.

Then, one day, my mother casually suggested that perhaps other people could enjoy these magazines too. She meant it as a fun suggestion, but I saw something worth exploring.

I realised that these magazines didn’t have to remain on my shelf after I’d read them. They could bring joy to other readers as well. I had a collection that could help me get started, an idea I wanted to pursue, and a desire to make reading more accessible and affordable.

That’s where Shelfli began.

SHELFLI's collection of Tinkle and Champak magazines.
Care

Every item has a journey.

Borrowing only works if what arrives is in good shape. Here’s what happens to every item between one reader and the next.

CataloguedEach copy logged with its issue and price.
CheckedCondition recorded before it goes out.
ShelvedStored so it can be found again.
BorrowedOff to a reader for five days.
ReturnedCollected and inspected on the way back.
Ready againBack on the shelf only after inspection — never passed on damaged.
The whole point

One book. Many readers.

A story doesn’t become less valuable because more people read it. It becomes part of more lives.
